Quarterly Pastoral Care Workshops being offered for Youth Workers.

During 2010, the Young People’s Ministry of the Tennessee Conference will offer quarterly Pastoral Care workshops for all youth workers. Ministering with young people is a challenging calling. While our focus is connecting them to Jesus Christ, the struggles they face in life become the biggest roadblock to receiving the grace they so desperately need. These workshops will help the youth worker develop skills and tools as well as connect them to resources that will equip them to discern the correct course necessary to help those in need.

Pastoral Care Workshop #1 - Tennessee Lives Count
Tennessee’s Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Training

This workshop will help youth workers recognize the warning signs of suicide in youth and young adults, and how to intervene and save a life.

The objective of this workshop is to provide participants with:
- general knowledge of the societal view of suicide, by addressing myths, facts, attitudes and opinions

- adequate knowledge of the steps that they can follow to prevent a suicidal person from completing suicide

- resources from which they can refer a suicidal person once they have intervened and prevented a suicidal attempt.

The workshop will be instructed by certified trainers from the Tennessee Lives Count Project in partnership with the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. For more information see their website at www.tspn.org.

All workshops will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Space is Limited.

Check out these great workshops that will be available for you to attend at Warmth In Winter 2010:Going The Distance. Each of them will challenge you to go the distance with your faith. They will inspire you to reach out to your friends and family with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ.

You won’t need to register for workshops this year but there will be limited seating in many of them, so take a look and make your decision. We encourage you to not go with your friends to the same workshop or go to the same one you might have gone to in the past. We have several new workshops to offer this year so that might not be an issue.

Warmth In Winter 2010 is coming soon. Check out the brochure and poster found here. Your group can begin registering now. The brochure, poster, and registration forms will be coming in the mail soon but we didn’t want you to have to wait. It’s going to be a great time, so don’t let your group miss out. We must have a complete Registration Form/Health Form for all persons attending the event. When you submit your registration to us at please include the Group Form, an individual registration form for each attending(Both Adults and Youth), and your payment. Once your registration is processed we will send you a WnW Leader’s Guide with important info about the event.

Cookeville/Murfreesboro District Youth Lay Speaking Retreat was great!

The weekend of November 6-7, 2009, 32 youth as well as some older folks attended the Cookeville/Murfreesboro District Youth Lay Speaking Retreat at Beersheba Springs Assembly. It was a great time learning about the call to ministry, spiritual gifts, and public speaking. The youth band from Crossville First UMC provided the music for the retreat. There were games and fellowship as well as some great discussion.

Youth selected to represent the TN Conference at the 2010 Young People’s Global Convo in Berlin, Germany

The Young People’s Ministry of the Tennessee Conference will be represented in Berlin, Germany by Elizabeth Roten from Epworth United Methodist Church in Franklin, TN. Elizabeth is a Middle School Representative on the CCYM and in the eighth grade. Her name was submitted along with the names of 5 youth, 5 young adults, and 2 adult youth workers to the Southeast Jurisdiction Conference Director gathering at the end of September. Each conference in the SEJ also submitted names in the same categories. From this group 5 youth, 5 young adults, and 2 adult youth workers were chosen to represent the SEJ at the 2010 Young People’s Global Convo from July 21-26, 2010 in Berlin, Germany.

Thank you to all who applied and congratulations to Elizabeth on being selected. We look forward to hearing from her when she returns.

the folks over at google have started a portal for information and mechanisms to help teach and become aware of internet abuse and safety issues.

you might find this helpful in conversing with parents about what to expect and the why’s of growing user generated communal life on the internet. it can be abusive and loving. generally the misconception is that it is unsafe, it can be, but with general precautions it can be safe for users.
